What Soffit and Fascia Actually Do

Fascia
The fascia board runs horizontally along the edge of your roofline, just below the shingles. It's what your gutters are physically attached to. Every hanger, every screw, every point of contact between your gutter system and your home runs through the fascia.
If the fascia board is rotted, soft, or improperly replaced, your gutters have nothing solid to hold onto.
Soffit
The soffit is the underside of the roof overhang, the section that faces down between the fascia and the exterior wall of your home. It covers and protects the rafters, and in most homes it also ventilates the attic.
When soffit is damaged or poorly installed, moisture gets in, wood rots, and the structural integrity of the entire roofline edge starts to deteriorate, including the fascia behind it.
When either component fails, the other is almost always affected. And when both need attention, your gutter system is right in the middle of it.

Can't a roofer just handle the soffit and fascia and then you handle the gutters?
Technically yes, but the results are more reliable when the same team does both. The fascia needs to be installed with the gutter system in mind, the angle, the material thickness, the overhang depth. When two separate contractors do the work in sequence, those details don't always get coordinated. We've seen the results of that approach more than once.
What material do you use for fascia replacement?
It depends on the home. We work with wood, aluminum-capped wood, and aluminum fascia depending on what's there originally, what the homeowner wants, and what makes the most sense for the gutter system going on top. We bring samples to every estimate so you can see the options before making a decision.
Does the soffit and fascia work affect my gutter warranty?
When we handle both the soffit and fascia repair and the gutter installation, our lifetime warranty covers the full result. If the soffit and fascia were done by another contractor before we arrived, the warranty covers our installation only. We'll always be clear about what's included.
My gutters are pulling away from the house. Is that a fascia problem?
Often yes. Gutters pull away when the fascia board behind them has deteriorated to the point where the hangers can no longer hold. If you're seeing this, call us and we'll assess the fascia before recommending anything. Rehanging gutters on rotted fascia is not a fix. It's a few more months before the same problem comes back.
